Branding Tips For Musicians
As a musician, it’s no question that branding can be hard. Often you’ll have a difficult time finding something that fits, other times you’ll worry that branding will force you to do the same thing over and over again. If done right, that’s certainly not the case. Here are some branding tips to help you as a musician.

Match Your Brand with the Sound of Your Music
Matching your brand to the sound of your music can be a difficult task as they are both entirely separate senses—sound and sight. To match them, there are four different methods you can try as explained by Musician Monster:
- Thematic – where you follow a theme
- Personal – where you create a personal brand
- Persona – where you create a persona
- Genre – where you model your brand based on existing artists
Pick which ones you want for your brand. From there, you need to find how the sound of your music can be made visually that way. For example, if you choose thematic you need to figure out the overarching theme of your music. Obviously, each song is different and has a different theme, but look for small connections drawn between them. Then decide how to present that theme visually. What kinds of colours best present your music’s theme? Warmer tones insinuate a vastly different style of music than cooler ones.
Define Yourself
Big companies like Apple, Walmart, and Adidas have one huge advantage in branding—they’re not people. As a musician, your brand is you. Branding yourself is very personal. When someone decides whether or not they like your music it can affect you emotionally much more than someone deciding they don’t like a company’s product because it feels as if the person is judging you. Defining your brand is about defining yourself. With something like this, where opinions can feel so personal, you need to make sure your brand is something so important to you that you can believe in it even with hurt feelings. When defining your brand, Talent House has some useful questions to ask yourself:
- What are my values? What do I really care about?
- What’s important to me aside from my art?
- What’s my look? Is there a certain group of people I like to identify myself with stylistically?
Know Your Audience
It’s important to know that as a musician, your brand isn’t always about you. It is your art and your hard work, but when you’re putting it out there for an audience they are just as (if not more) important than you. “Spend a little more time concerned with your audience than yourself. Those people that you want to surround your life with – what do they want? What would serve them? Are you going to shock, please, or inspire them?” – Skinny Artist. Your brand must relate to your music and the desires of your audience. You need to be aware of who they are and what they like. Are they younger? Are they listening to you because you remind them of another artist?
Make it authentic
As an artist, a musician’s brand needs to feel authentic to their audience. While big companies like Apple gain consumers based on the function of their product, an artist gains fans through the emotional and personal connection people feel towards their art. “Your audience has an ability to catch on when you are not being true to yourself.” – Remix Artistry is about being real. You gain fans because they feel personally connected, so make your brand personal. You want to be successful, but to be so you must always remember that you aren’t a big company, you’re a human being. A musician’s branding is a version of themselves and their art. It’s vital to always have that on your mind when creating your brand. Without it, branding will never stop being intimidating and restricting.
